The Origins
Mother's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world and has its roots in the USA. On May 12, 1907, Anna Jarvis from Grafton, West Virginia, organized a memorial service in honor of her deceased mother. Her mother had been particularly committed to prisoners of war – and Anna wanted to pay tribute to her in this way. The idea was well received, and soon Mother's Day became an established holiday in the USA. From there, it spread to many other countries.
In Germany, Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1914. Since then, we have traditionally celebrated it on the second Sunday in May. On this day, we show our mothers how important they are to us – with flowers, chocolates, or a loving surprise. Maybe you could even craft something very personal? A custom-designed stamp or a card from the stempel-fabrik are great ideas! Many families also use the day to spend time together – over breakfast, on an outing, or simply with lots of hugs.
And what about Dad?
Father's Day has its origins in Europe and is often also called Gentlemen's Day or Men's Day. In Germany, it traditionally falls on Ascension Day, which is always a Thursday. While Mom usually enjoys a cozy breakfast with the family, Father's Day is often associated with outings – whether with the whole family or as a men-only gathering. Some fathers go on a bike ride, take a hike, or simply enjoy a day off with their loved ones.
Being a parent – a real challenge
Thanking Mom and Dad for all their love and care is especially important on these two days. Being a parent is not an easy task. It means a lot of dedication, patience, and time – every single day! They support, help, comfort, laugh with us, and are always there when we need them.
That's why we say it loud and clear today: THANK YOU, MOM AND DAD!
